Traditionally, many djembefola consider the djembe a living entity, comprised of three spirits: the spirit of the tree from which the wood was carved, the spirit of the animal that gave the drum its skin, and the spirit of the drum’s maker. This makes each drum completely unique — infused with the spirits of its creators. Drumheads are typically made from goatskin, but more rarely can be antelope, zebra, deer, or calf. So yeah, this instrument has some mythical qualities to it.

Give yourself a very clear sense of what you’re hoping to accomplish and discuss it with your engineer(s) ahead of time. For me, that looks like setting some clear “Must-Haves” (e.g. all the bass tracks for the entire album) and then a few “Nice-to-Haves” (e.g. a random track of all of us hollering like banshees). Accomplish the “Must-Haves” first and then allow yourself to go crazy on the “Nice-to-Haves” with whatever time you have left.

Sırma is a singer, songwriter, producer, and topliner who has recorded with the likes of Akon, Illenium, and Keri Hilson. She has recorded and produced vocals for jingles for major ads, and written and produced original tracks that hit the top of the Spotify charts in her native Turkey. She studied contemporary writing & production at Berklee College of Music, where she learned to become a self-sufficient, multifaceted musician. She also studied production and mixing at London School of Sound, and has worked at various studios on production and sound engineering.

“I thought the course was really well designed and helped me get a grip on concepts I’d heard before but had never really gotten my head around. A lot of things really clicked in, and working 1:1 with Martin was great. My goal was to introduce more complex harmony and dissonance into my music so have been really pleased with the results and the new material I’ve been working on over the last few months.”

Now, you’ll also need to work out a door split with the venue. I always ask for the door split to be increased as we well more tickets. If I do a great job planning a show that brings in a ton of people, I think it’s fair to say that I should be rewarded by getting a better door split. The more people I bring in, the more money the venue makes on alcohol sales.

The last important aspect of phase concerns signal processing. And no, I’m not really talking about the guitar pedal effect called “phaser” — if you’re using a lot of plugins, each one that you introduce into your mix will affect the phase. Each instance of digital processing adds latency to the signal, even if only a few hundredths of a second. Many DAWs and plugin manufacturers attempt various compensations for this, but regardless, it’s important to be aware that it’s always going be there, and in some cases, unavoidably so.

Unless you’re backed by a major label, or at least an internationally established indie, you’re likely to be classified as “Promising” or “Undiscovered,” but that doesn’t mean you can’t use all of the helpful insights that NBS gathers every week. Your report also includes an audience map and any available demographics, your reach metrics for the social media platforms you’ve connected to, and any chart appearances on Pandora or playlist placements (also Pandora specific).

If that wasn’t enough, Ithaca is also home to 73 Records, a youth-run label that releases music by kids and young adults — mainly still in high school. It’s a community that supports musicians (full stop).

Described by Time Out New York as “Brooklyn’s post-millennial Mozart” and The New Times as “one of the more consistently inventive, surprising composers now working in New York,” Missy Mazzoli has obviously earned an indisputable place on this list. She’s been creating innovative, daring, and also stunningly gorgeous music for almost 30 years. A composer and pianist, Mazzoli not only writes ground-breaking operas, orchestral works, and chamber music, but is the founder and keyboardist for the all-female band Victoire. Selflessly spreading her knowledge and original musical insight, Mazzoli is now a member of the Composition faculty at Mannes School of Music at The New School.

The aim of this structure is to provide flexibility and depth to help you make big leaps forward in your music or career. Because there’s no pre-established content like there is in our courses, we’ve found this program works best for musicians who fall a bit outside the lines. If you’ve got a specific musical project or goal in mind, if you don’t really want a bunch of tutorials, and especially if you’re in need of a sounding board for professional feedback, this program is definitely for you.

A few years ago, the NYU Music Experience Design Lab launched a web application called the aQWERTYon. The name is short for “QWERTY accordion.” The idea is to make it as easy to play music on the computer keyboard as it is with the chord buttons on an accordion. The aQWERTYon maps scales to the keyboard so that there are no “wrong notes,” and so that each column of keys plays a chord.

The vocal folds are a small, yet complex structure of muscles that require a lot of hydration to work properly. The thyroarytenoid muscle (aka vocalis muscle) is the innermost part, which is covered in several layers of a Jello-like substance of mucosa called the lamina propria. It is soft, elastic, and covered with epithelium, which is a thin layer akin to loose skin. Just as our skin can get red and irritated if it’s too dry, this can happen to the vocal folds too, leading to the same issues, plus swelling.

These ideas all might ring true in other area of life, but they don’t have to apply to your singing voice. Singing does not necessarily have to render you “open” and vulnerable to the listener. Try to disconnect from these notions. The best way to do so is to see your voice is an instrument, and your singing is a product of your creativity and skill. Your singing is not a reflection of your “soul” (so to speak).
