I find musicians make this last mistake all too often. It’s related to not seeing music as a real job. Musicians set themselves up for disaster when they don’t take their finances and contractual responsibilities seriously. Signing a bad contract has killed the careers of many musicians, and not prioritizing financial literacy even if you’re a DIY artist can be just as dangerous.

“I’ve been holding on here for so long, and it’s such a struggle. Like, normal life is a struggle,” she says. “I was barely making the money I needed to get by, and all of a sudden, that’s gone, and now it’s like, well, I guess this is what I’m supposed to do right now. It hurts me because I know there’s a lot of work to be done here, and the artists community has lost so many funds already this year, and it’s just been going downhill and downhill and downhill, and I’m sorry. I can’t do this anymore.”

The nearly 11-minute version of “Lost Someone” is a high point; Brown demonstrates his ability to ensconce his sexuality in a preacher’s cloak. Throughout this song, it feels like he’s beseeching the audience to believe in a higher power. Judging by the screams of the audience, I’d say he converted all of them. This style of performance would later go on to be emulated by other larger-than-life performers such as Prince or Bruce Springsteen.

Ethan Hein is a Doctoral Fellow in Music Education at New York University. He teaches music technology, production and education at NYU and Montclair State University. With the NYU Music Experience Design Lab, Ethan has taken a leadership role in the creation of new technologies for learning and expression, most notably the Groove Pizza. He is the instructor of the free Soundfly course series called Theory for Producers. He maintains a widely-followed and influential blog, and has written for various publications, including Slate, Quartz, and NewMusicBox.

Had a hard week at work? The Anodyne is the place to grab a beer with friends on a Friday or Saturday night. Just be careful you don’t have too many drinks, because you have to climb a flight of stairs to get in and out of this place. But the climb is totally worth it because Anodyne sits at the top of a historic downtown building that overlooks Central Avenue, the main street running through downtown. You can people-watch and take in some of the best views of the city from this spot. But what we really love, is that they have an iPod console that allows patrons to choose the music — think jukebox for the younger generation. I believe this may the only bar where Joy Division and Garth Brooks might be played in the playlist shuffle.

The B♭, my friend, is what we call a tension. A tension is not a chord tone (root, 3rd, 5th, or 7th), but it can be used to add color to chord structures.

Unlocking the Emotional Power of Chords is a course that aims to demystify the world of harmony. Students explore concepts like tonality, mode mixture, functional harmony, and constant structure. In addition to working with borrowed chords, Patricia brought her own musicality to the table here, experimenting with ways to voice her harmonies and finding an excellent balance of tension and release. On top of that, she added a vocal line that does a perfect job of tying the piece together.

You don’t need a great microphone to sound good. While microphones vary from tens of dollars to tens of thousands of dollars, all of them are completely useless if your recording environment is unsuitable. Go soft or go home (or both!). Soft furnishings are key when it comes to recording voices. Your recording environment is the most important part of any audio content. I spend a lot of time treating badly recorded audio; the better you record at source, the better the audio will sound and the easier it will be to edit.

For all these reasons, we’re super happy to be able to experience musical life in Africa through the work of a handful of amazing nonprofit organizations, learning communities, and platforms for creative expression, and we believe that the future of global popular music is already being shaped on the African continent as we speak. Here are six initiatives in Africa today doing constructive work for the future of music and music education.

It turns out a lot of those Disney movies were scored by the same person, Alan Menken. Perhaps he was anticipating that this music would eventually lock inside his audience’s subconscious when he wrote it!

Eventually, the bass line drops down an octave and changes its stubborn pedaling to play chord tones along with the rest of the rhythm section. It starts with the same old D and A. Next, it moves to C♯ and A for the A chord. Then it moves to the B chord but still keeps the pressure on with that non-chord-tone A. Finally, it rounds off with a pleasant, resolute walk-up, bouncing back up between notes of the major scale and A, which is the root of the chord. Classic!

“Sicko Mode”: Wow! So this song is basically three songs in one. Part one is Drake singing in B♭ major pentatonic over a digi-cricket-wahwah-fog of harmonies that broke my brain so hard I had to use a lifeline. Thankfully, Martin Fowler on the Soundfly staff pegged it for me as Cm9 to B♭Maj7, which then switched the voicing just barely to E♭Maj7 and a D7♭13 without the C. What a thick mess!

Jeremy is a Montreal-based musician, sound artist and improviser who loves giving advice to emerging artists on how to make their tours more effective. He writes, records and performs electroacoustic “concrète” music for tape, oscillators and amplified objects and surfaces, as well as solo guitar.
