Not much is known about Agnesi’s life after she married Pier Antonio Pinottini and took his name, and much of her music is either lost or undated. However, we do know that she received generous compositional patronage from Holy Roman Empress, Maria Theresia Walburga Amalia Christina, and another female noble composer, Maria Antonia Walpurgis. The Holy Roman Empress apparently sung Agnesi Pinottini’s music publicly. There is a story that Agnes Pinottini was part of an organizational committee that invited the 14-year old Mozart to play in Milan in 1770 and present at his performance. She composed some operas, as well as quite a bit of keyboard and vocal music for small chamber ensembles.

Nerves affect your body, which in turn affect your ability. Adrenaline pumping through your blood might cause you to sweat excessively, your spine might contact, your legs might start to feel like jelly, dilated pupils, dry mouth… You need to identify which symptoms you experience. Study them when you’re removed from the nervy situation. Gain clarity on them. Some guitarists like the level of control and consistency you get with amp simulators, but a little bit of wild energy in the room from a live amp can go a long way in terms of inspiring a great performance. For example, out of a real amp, when I palm mute power chords, I can hear (and feel) a lot more low-end rumble on the initial attack. The decision to use amp simulators instead of a real amp is up to you. Try both, and see which one gives you the tone you’re happy with.

Anyway, shout out to Zedd for sneaking in an Am chord there. It took me a while to notice it. Form-wise, the chorus is a different length each time with some variations, and — wait, hold up… is this a Target commercial?

For example, the whole concept of “toplining” may still be foreign to most non-musicians, but if you’re a songwriter who frequents co-writing sessions, there’s no way you haven’t heard of it before. Likewise, the term “scratch vocal” might confuse some, but almost every singer or songwriting producer you meet will know that one intimately.

So normally with this series we look at lectures and videos that focus on a single artist, but today we’re throwing both of those concepts out the window and zooming in on a recent panel held at the annual Ableton Loop Conference featuring educators, not artists, and not one, but three of them. The panelists: Ethan Hein, Doctoral Fellow in Music Education at NYU, adjunct professor of music technology at NYU and Montclair State University, and Soundfly instructor; Melissa Uye-Parker, British songwriter, performer, and educator based in London; and Jack Schaedler, software developer at Ableton who has worked on Ableton’s microsite for learning music fundamentals. And the panel was moderated by none other than Dennis DeSantis, composer, sound designer, percussionist, and author, who is also Head of Documentation for Ableton.

You can see why turntablists like scratching “ahhhh” and “fressssshhhh” so much — they’re structureless slabs of tuned white noise, so they’re more forgiving. Scratching a rap a cappella is another story. The words have meanings, and the pitches have a musical context. When a word falls in the wrong spot or with the wrong emphasis, it sounds much worse than a wrong note in a jazz solo, and an untrained listener is more likely to notice it.

These are just examples, but you get the point. Find the free time in your calendar, pull out your phone, and put stuff in your calendar app (or a paper calendar if you still use one of those). And don’t forget to set a reminder on your phone. This way, you’re holding your future self accountable to be efficient with your music time.

One great way to do so without having to ask people for their contact information is through subscribing to your band where they consume music directly. For listening tendencies, this means encouraging them to subscribe on Spotify, YouTube, Apple, Amazon or whatever their favorite streaming site is. If they want to just know when they can see you live again, ask them to subscribe to your tour dates on BandsinTown or Songkick; whichever platform you use to post your shows.
