55 years ago today, the Rolling Stones released their “5×5” EP, the recording session in which they serendipitously met their blues idol, Muddy Waters.

“We want to help people become better listeners and help them identify and understand the music they actually love, so they can confidently find more of it.”

Evan Zwisler is a NYC-based musician who is most notably known for his work with The Values as a songwriter and guitarist. He is an active member of the Brooklyn music scene, throwing fundraisers and organizing compilations for Planned Parenthood and the Anti-Violence Project. He started playing music in the underground punk scene of Shanghai with various local bands when he was in high school before going to California for college and finally moving to New York in 2012.

Well, you’re going to need a tuner pedal; all that hard, consistent strumming is bound to detune some of your strings after every couple of songs! Tuning by ear is pretty tough in club gigs, so it’s always handy to have a direct-signal going into your chain. Almost every guitarist I know uses the Boss TU-3, but the Korg PB01 works just as well and is cheaper! Boss and Korg are household brands. We’re just talking about a tuner pedal here, it doesn’t need to be high end. My trick is to put my tuner at the end of my effects chain, so I can mute all of my FX noise abruptly just by stepping on it once. It’s a lot of fun with powerful climactic endings.

Crowdfunding campaigns with pitch videos receive average contributions up to 12% higher than campaigns without. They’re also more likely to get shared on Indiegogo’s homepage. Finally, their success rates jump about 20 to 30 points on average.

The in-depth tone controls also allowed the Space Echo to be manipulated and create some wild effects.  If you turn up the intensity control as the echo fades out you’ll get this intense swelling effect that you can hear on many dub or reggae songs. If you change the tape speed or delay rate you’ll hear crazy pitch shifting and oscillating effects. Artists like Pink Floyd, Radiohead, and Bob Marley have all used the RE-201 to create absolutely stunning music.

When it comes to promoting your music, it’s easy to focus on social media, writing emails to your fans, and exciting album launches. But often, the more subtle elements — like crafting an incredible bio or developing your image — are overlooked or put on the back burner.

2. Slovenly Records, an international imprint, is raising funds for both Puerto Rico and Mexico. On the island, donations go to El Departamento de la Comida. They’re working to rebuild their restaurant space as well as support several sustainable food projects. (Hurricane Maria wiped out 80 percent of Puerto Rico’s agricultural production.) Donations of $10 or more qualify for the chance to win passes to various festivals.

“…underneath the faded canopy of the bland mainstream lies a multiverse of challenging, engaging, explorative, enlivening work which I would say is the real ‘music of now,’ and which I love deeply.”

Professional songwriters can generate many different sources of income from their songs in the same way an author creates additional income turning a novel into a movie, TV series, or graphic novel. It doesn’t matter whether your song has gathered a million plays or just a handful of listens — you can still put your compositions to work for you to generate more revenue. All it takes is a little creativity and a sense of adventure.

I love this quote from one of my favorite songwriters. Have you ever heard a song that captures exactly what you’re feeling? A song that makes you say, “YES! That’s exactly it, I just wasn’t able to express it myself!” Well, my friends, that’s one of the many joys of songwriting. So yes, you have a responsibility to help others with your words and melodies. Some days you might feel like you’re not helping anyone, but remember: The world needs the magic of music. And if musicians didn’t exist, we would never have that feeling of catharsis. And I don’t want to live in that world.
